The SOS Children's Village Paraíba was completed in 1987 in João Pessoa, a city with approximately 400.000 inhabitants, which is the capital of the Federal State of Paraíba. This dry and hot region in the north eastern part of the country suffers repeatedly long droughts. The consequences for the economy are catastrophic, many inhabitants see migration to the big cities and industrial centres as their last way out.
The SOS Children's Village Paraíba is located in the suburbs of Mangabeira, about 11 kilometres from the city centre and consists of 12 family houses. The area of Mangabeira, which has about 25.000 inhabitants, has a good infrastructure. In the immediate vicinity of the SOS Children's Village are schools which are attended by the Village children, a kindergarten, a market and shopping centres.
