Country information
After the initial construction of a home for Tibetan refugee children, an SOS Children's Village was built in Pokhara in 1978. Pokhara is a small town in the highlands about 6 hours by car from the capital, Kathmandu.

The SOS Children's Village Pokhara consists of twelve family houses, the Village Director's house and an administrative building. The SOS Children's Village includes an SOS Kindergarten for the smaller children. There is a day-care centre for children of Tibetan refugees. After kindergarten, children can attend the SOS School, which now provides education up to the twelfth form. The school is open to children from the neighbourhood as well. The SOS Children's Village also runs an SOS Medical Centre, which is managed by two full-time nurses. They take care of the needs of the SOS children, the staff and the people from the neighbourhood. Close to the SOS Children's Village, there is an SOS Vocational Training Centre with various workshops. At this centre, young Tibetans from all over Nepal and also from the Tibetan SOS Children's Villages in India can acquire various technical and office skills. Within the framework of a practical apprenticeship, the young people perform different jobs in the refugee camps. The electricians' apprentices, for example, supplied 200 refugee homes with electricity.
