The first Brazilian SOS Children's Village was built in 1968 in Porto Alegre, the capital of the Federal State of Rio Grande do Sul, situated in the southern part of the country. The SOS Children's Village of Porto Alegre is located in the suburbs of the city on a site of 2,5 hectares. It consists of 13 family houses, a Community House with an SOS Kindergarten, the Village Director's apartment and an apartment for SOS aunts, as well as an administration building in which the offices, an out-patients' clinic and various multipurpose rooms are located. Furthermore, there is a sports hall and an SOS Youth Home. The children attend the public school in the vicinity of the SOS Children's Village. At a distance of 5 kilometres, there is a state-run out-patients' clinic for children. The SOS Social Centre which was erected in Canoas, 15 kilometres from Porto Alegre, serves as transit home for maltreated and destitute minors.
