The first steps to build an SOS Children's Village in Portugal were taken in the early ?60s. In 1967, the first SOS Children's Village Bicesse, which is located near the capital of Lisbon, could open its doors to the needy and abandoned children of the country. A second project had to be delayed because of the carnation revolution in 1974 (During the non-violent coup d'état on 25th April 1974 soldiers were seen in the streets with red carnations in the muzzles of their tanks and rifles.) But already two years later the corner stone for the second SOS Children's Village Gulpilhares near the town of Vila Nova de Gaia was laid (Vila Nova de Gaia is the place where the most famous port wine cellars can be seen. It is located on the left side of the river Douro just in front of Portugal's second biggest town Porto.) During the 1980s a third SOS Children's Village was opened in the town of Guarda.
