In the large city of Pune (Poona), which is situated in the state of Maharashtra approximately 200 km south of Mumbai (Bombay), an SOS Children's Village was inaugurated in 1979 after two years of construction. The five-hectare (twelve-acre) site is located in the northern suburb of Yervada, about 7 km from the Pune airport.
The SOS Children's Village consists of 20 family houses, the Village Director's house, an aunts' house, staff quarters and one SOS Youth House each for girls and boys. There is also a multi-purpose hall and an SOS Primary School. This school is attended by children from the SOS Children's Village. However, there are also places for children from the neighbourhood. Some of the SOS children attend one of the several elementary and vocational schools near the SOS Children's Village. The medical ward of the SOS Children's Village is open to the people who live near by. Older girls and boys from the SOS Children's Village Latur also stay at the SOS Youth Houses in Pune while they are attending college or doing vocational training.
