The SOS Children's Village Rio Grande do Norte was built in 1979 in the city of Caicó. Caicó has approx. 50.000 inhabitants and is situated in the very dry and hot Northeast of the country. This area repeatedly suffers from extended droughts and the consequences for agriculture are disastrous. The SOS Children's Village is located on the outskirts of the city of Caicó in the centre of a large residential area and is very well integrated into the neighbourhood. It consists of 16 family houses, a Community Centre and a Village Director's house. There is also a so-called SOS Social Centre with a pharmacy, an infirmary and an SOS School in the SOS Children's Village. These SOS facilities can also be used by the population of the surrounding area and are very much appreciated. In addition to that, there is an SOS Youth Village in the provincial capital of Natal at a distance of 292 kilometres for the grown-up girls and boys who attend higher schools or undergo vocational training. Natal is the nearest city with educational facilities.
