The SOS Children's Village Río Hondo is located on the main road leading from Lima to the Andes, about 40 km from Lima, at an altitude of 1000 m. The SOS Children's Village borders on the road and on the river Rimac. Río Hondo has a very dry climate with 360 days of sunshine per year, but as the river carries sufficient water for irrigation, bananas, avocados and many other fruit and vegetables can be cultivated. The SOS Children's Village consists of 12 family houses, a Village Director's house and a Community House with a small store. Also affiliated to the SOS Children's Village is an SOS Kindergarten, which is open for the children of the surrounding area, as well as a workshop. Since the local school system is very poor, the children attend private schools in the nearby city of Chosica.
