The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in Rwanda started as early as in 1979 with the construction of the first SOS Children's Village Kigali which was put into operation in December 1979. In 1981, the SOS Kindergarten Kigali was opened and in 1983, an SOS Youth Village was built. In this SOS Youth Village, young people from the SOS Children's Village stay during their higher educational and vocational training in order to prepare themselves step by step to an independent life outside the SOS Children's Village. In spring of 1991, the construction of the second SOS Children's Village Gikongoro was started and was finished in 1992. On 4 January 1993, the SOS Kindergarten Gikongoro was put into operation.

After the end of the tragic and gruesome civil war that ravaged the country in 1994, SOS-Kinderdorf International decided to build a third SOS Children's Village in Byumba in order to give a new home to children who had lost their parents during war. The first children moved to the SOS Children's Village Byumba in October 1998 and on 27 April 1999, the SOS Children's Village was officially inaugurated by the president of SOS-Kinderdorf International, Mr Helmut Kutin.
