In 1992, the corner-stone of the SOS Children's Village was laid in Santa Cruz. The capital of the eastern Bolivian province of the same name is situated at an altitude of 440 metres on the banks of the river Río Piray. During the last 40 years, Santa Cruz has attracted many migrants from the surrounding highlands, who came to the city in the wake of an improved infrastructure and the discovery of oil, natural gas and iron ore. Santa Cruz has developed into a large city with a population of 600,000 - a fact that also has contributed to the increase of social problems such as poverty and unemployment. Today, Santa Cruz is an important trade centre and has become the headquarters of many consumer goods industries.
The SOS Children's Village Santa Cruz was constructed on a site measuring approximately 15,000 square metres. It consists of 10 family houses and two SOS Youth Houses. The SOS Children's Village lies on the ancient road to Cochabamba in a residential area near the Río Piray. This location was chosen because the necessary infrastructure was already in place (such as local administration and authorities, a church, etc.) The children attend the local public schools and are well integrated into the local community.
