The SOS Children's Village Santa Maria was inaugurated in 1980 in the city of Santa Maria, in the southern Federal State of Rio Grande do Sul. Santa Maria which has its own airport, is located west of Porto Alegre in the central part of the country. The SOS Children's Village Santa Maria was erected on the outskirts of the city on a 2,5 hectares site and consists of 5 family houses, a Village Director's house and a Community House. The children attend the public schools in the vicinity. There are also hospitals not far from the SOS Children's Village. After the land was drained, a small farm could be established. The cultivation of fruit, cassava, potatoes, maize, black beans and other vegetables covers in part the SOS Children's Village's own needs.
