The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in Serbia and Montenegro started already in 1970 and lead to the construction the first and by now only SOS Children's Village in this country which was officially inaugurated in Novi Sad on 15 November 1975 in the presence of , founder of SOS-Kinderdorf International.

After the outbreak of armed conflicts between the different parts of former Yugoslavia, children and adults who had been driven from their homes, were accomodated in the SOS Children's Village.

In 1995, the whole SOS Children's Village was renovated. During NATO-attacks on Serbia and Montenegro, bombs were dropped on Novi Sad as well as on the region's most important bridge over the Danube which is situated next to the SOS Children's Village.

Fortunately, not a single inhabitant of the SOS Children's Village was injured and only minor damages had to be assessed and already in 1999, necessary repairs were made on some of the houses' roofs, the houses were insulated and their paneling was renewed.
