The SOS Children's Village is situated about 12 km from the city of Shillong on a green hill covered with pine trees. Members of the local Khasi tribe think that this hill is the way up to heaven. It rains a lot in this area and so the landscape is very green. Shillong is a favourite with tourists because of its natural beauty. It is called "Scotland of the East". The SOS Children's Village is located just off National Highway no. 40, near Umiam lake. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya state. This region is home to several Khasi tribes with their long tradition of matriarchy. The main economic factors are agriculture and mineral resources.
The SOS Children's Village Shillong consists of twelve family houses, the Village Director's house, staff quarters, a multi-purpose hall and various administrative buildings. The SOS medical ward provides basic medical care for the inhabitants of the SOS Children's Village and the population of the neighbourhood. The smaller children are looked after at the SOS Kindergarten, which is also open to children from local families. In the city of Shillong, there are several markets, schools, colleges and other educational institutions. The city also has hospitals and other medical facilities.
