Our Facilities

In 1970, SOS Children's Village International started to spread the idea of SOS Children's Villages in Africa. Sierra Leone was chosen to be one of the first countries on the African continent. After a few teething problems the construction of the first SOS Children's Village in Freetown was begun in 1973. One year later the first orphans moved in. In the meantime, the following SOS facilities were built in Freetown and Bo: SOS Children's Village Bo, SOS Kindergartens, SOS Youth Facilities, SOS Primary- and Secondary Schools (vocational school). In addition, a SOS Trainings- and Production Centre and a Medical Centre for Handicapped children (SOS Handicapped Home) were opened in Freetown and a self-redress fishing project was started in Bo.

From 1995 to 1999, the situation in Sierra Leone was very unstable. Civil war broke out three times. Due to the intermittent threat to SOS facilities some of them had to be evacuated temporarily and some of them closed. On the other hand, up to 2000 refugees found refuge in both SOS Children's Villages. In 1996 and 1999 (when 30.000 people sought refuge in the sports stadium in Freetown) SOS Children's Village International started an emergency relief programme thus helping these people to survive. In view of the prevailing misery in Freetown construction of a second SOS Children's Village in Freetown/Waterloo-Hastings was discussed, but not yet started due to the political situation.
