The first South African SOS Children's Village was completed in 1983 in Ennerdale near Johannesburg, and a second one in 1986 in Mamelodi, not far from the capital Pretoria. As these SOS Children's Villages were situated in black areas, they were only able to admit black children. Soon the idea of a new village in a mixed area was born. This third SOS Children's Village which was founded in Port Elizabeth on the Eastern Cape, was opened in 1989, followed by a fourth one in Cape Town 1994. The fifth Village was erected in summer 1996 in Pietermaritzburg, making SOS Children?s Village Umtata, which was opened in 1997, the sixth Village in South Africa. The construction of a seventh SOS Children's Village in South Africa, in Mpumalanga, the easternmost province, is planned.
