Our Facilities
In 1980, the government of Sri Lanka and SOS-Kinderdorf International reached an agreement to establish SOS Children's Villages and associated projects in the country. The government allotted a piece of land to SOS-Kinderdorf International. The organization started its work in Sri Lanka in March 1981 and established a project office at Mount Lavinia, a suburb of Colombo. On 1 April the foundation stone for the SOS Children's Village Piliyandala was laid. The first three families moved into the SOS Children's Village Piliyandala on 9 November of the same year. On 20 January 1982, the SOS Children's Village Piliyandala was officially inaugurated by and representatives of the government of Sri Lanka.
In 1983, SOS-Kinderdorf International and the Ministry of Education signed an agreement to establish an SOS School next to the SOS Children's Village Piliyandala. This was the first and only time the government entered into an agreement with an NGO to set up an educational facility. In 1993, the National Office of SOS-Kinderdorf International was officially established.
