The SOS Children's Village St. Petersburg has been constructed in Pushkin, a town of 200,000 inhabitants, 17 km south of St. Petersburg. The 3 hectares site has been made available free of charge to SOS Children's Villages for 100 years. Schools, kindergartens, hospitals, museums and parks are nearby; the immediate neighbourhood of the SOS Children's Village consists mainly of dachas and new buildings.
The SOS Children's Village comprises 12 Family Houses, a Village Director's house, an assistants' house, two staff apartments, a garage, a workshop, a Community House and a multi-purpose hall; it will provide accommodation for roughly 90 children. These children mostly come from state orphanages, where the situation is devastating as a result of overcrowding and a lack of financial and personnel capacity.
