In 1993, the corner-stone of SOS Children's Village Sucre was laid. Sucre is situated at about 8500 feet above sea-level, approximately 400 kilometres from the capital city, La Paz. According to the constitution, Sucre should still be the capital of Bolivia, although in practice it relinquished its rank more than 100 years ago to the seat of the government, La Paz.
SOS Children's Village Sucre was built on a 5 hectares site, about 6 kilometres from the city centre and is part of an area which was officially declared as urban, but, however, does not benefit of urban infrastructure. The majority of the local population has to do without drinking water, electricity, telephones or sanitary facilities.
The SOS Children's Village consists of 12 family houses, an SOS Kindergarten, sports fields, a green area, playgrounds and small orchards. An SOS Social Centre is one of the most recent facilities built inside the SOS Children's Village Sucre.
There are two public schools, a hospital and a church within easy reach. The local market is hardly needed, as the SOS Children's Village can cover its own needs by using its large grounds for the production of fruit and the breeding of chickens, pigs, rabbits and ducks.
