In August 1975, the first negotiations about the construction of an SOS Children's Village in Sudan were held between the Sudanese Ministry of Social Affairs and SOS Children's Village International. A field study which was carried out showed that the capital Khartoum was the best suited place for the SOS Children's Village. The construction works were begun as early as November 1975. In 1978, the SOS Children's Village Khartoum was inaugurated and in 1981.
The war in Sudan which started in 1955 and which still goes on has had a devastating effect on the living conditions of Sudanese children. Especially the population in the south of the country lives in constant fear and suffers permanent privation. On this background the Vice President of Sudan and the Regional Director of SOS Children's Village International came together at the end of 1996 to discuss the construction of a second SOS Children's Village in south Sudan. As a result of this meeting, a site of 30.000m2 located in Malakal (Upper Nile region) was entrusted to SOS Children's Village International. The construction of the SOS Children's Village Malakal started in 1998. It was terminated at the end of 2001.
