Our Facilities
In 1984, the former President of Tanzania, Mr Ali Hassan Mwinyi, made the request to to build an SOS Children's Village in Zanzibar. Construction of the SOS Children's Village Zanzibar was started in 1988, thanks to the generous financial assistance of the Swedish SOS Fund Raising Association. In 1991, the first children moved into their new family houses. The official opening ceremony took place in March 1995.
In March 1993, the SOS Primary School Zanzibar started to operate. A Secondary School was added to it in 1994. In the very same year, a family house was adapted to temporarily serve as SOS Kindergarten. In 1995, the SOS Youth House was opened. After completion of all construction works of the SOS Kindergarten it was also opened for children from the neighbourhood.
In 1994, SOS-Kinderdorf International decided the construction of an SOS Children's Village on the mainland of Tanzania. The location chosen was Arusha, a provincial town with approximately 90.000 inhabitants in the north of the country.
