In 1989, the construction of the fourth Mexican SOS Children's Village was started at Tehuacán, a small town southeast of Mexico City. An earth-wall, approximately 3,5 meters high, goes right across the 2,4 hectare building site on which the SOS Children's Village Tehuacan was erected, separating naturally the residential area from the public area. Both districts are connected by a tunnel.
The SOS Children's Village consists of the family houses, the aunts' house, the Village Director's house as well as the community house, which includes a village shop, a sewing room, a shoemaker's workshop, a bakery and a small workshop for various kinds of repairs required in the SOS Children's Village, and the administrative building which houses community rooms, a dentist's and a doctor's surgery. In addition to that, the SOS Children's Village runs its own SOS Kindergarten for up to 100 children from the SOS Village and from the vicinity. Playgrounds and sports fields have been laid out for the children. Two SOS workshops offer vocational training in joining and tailoring. The adjoining SOS Social Centre includes an SOS Day Care Centre and a transit home for infants.
