Tijuana
Country information
The fifth SOS Children's Village has been set up in the town of Tijuana which is situated on the border with the U.S State of California. Many people from the South of Mexico have moved there, as they were looking for a better life. They hope that by moving to Tijuana, it will be easier to find a good work or even get the chance to emigrate to the United States - a very risky and in most cases illegal undertaking. Due to their lack of education and professional qualification many of them sink into poverty and destitution or end up as criminals or prostitutes. As a result of the terrible social and economic situation many children are abandoned, mistreated and abused.

The SOS Children's Village has been set up on a 1,8 hectare building site, which is situated in a good part of town. It consists of 12 family houses, the standard community facilities of an SOS Children's Village and an SOS Kindergarten. The inhabitants of the SOS Children's Village grow their own fruit and vegetables. The infrastructure is excellent, as there are hospitals, schools and markets within easy reach of the SOS Children's Village.
