The construction work for the SOS Children's Village Tirana started in January 1994, the official corner-stone laying ceremony took place on March 23. In the month of September of the same year, the construction work for the SOS Kindergarten began. In June 1995, the construction of the first Albanian SOS Children's Village was completed and the first children and SOS mothers moved into their new homes. In October 1995, the construction of an SOS School started and was completed in May 1996, whereas the SOS Kindergarten was opened in November 1995.
On 18 October 1996, the official opening of the SOS Children's Village Tirana, the SOS Kindergarten and the SOS School took place and the most recent facility, the canteen of the SOS School, was put in operation at the beginning of 1998. The SOS Kindergarten and the SOS School are also open to the children of the neighbourhood and are highly esteemed because of their good equipment as well as the highly qualified staff.
The SOS Children's Village Tirana is situated in Sauk, a village with 6.000 inhabitants, approx. 4 kilometres south-east of the Albanian capital, Tirana. The SOS Children's Village consists of 13 family houses, administrative buildings, an SOS Kindergarten and an SOS School. The Rinas airport lies at a distance of 25 kilometres. The SOS Children's Village is located in a very beautiful spot, just behind a park and a lake.
