The construction of the first Bulgarian SOS Children's Village was completed in Trjavna, in Central Bulgaria in 1993. Trjavna is a pretty small town of great historic interest. It is located in a very attractive mountainous region about 250 kilometres east of Sofia. The site of the SOS Children's Village which was put at the disposal of SOS by the municipality, is situated on a slope with beautiful views of the town. 12 family houses were erected as well as a Village Director's house, a small community house, a workshop, a playground and a sports field.
The infrastructure of the surrounding area is excellent: There are good schools, nursery schools and a hospital in the immediate vicinity of the SOS Children's Village. Since 1998, there are also SOS Youth Communities in Veliko Tarnovo about 30 kilometres from Trajvna, where the young people from the SOS Children's Village stay during their vocational training or higher education in order to be prepared to a life outside the SOS Children's Village.
