Tsumeb is a mining town half-way between Windhoek and the Angolan border. Its population is approximately 20,000. The town is surrounded by dry, stony and almost treeless hills. The SOS Children's Village is situated on the outskirts of the town in a middle-class residential area. In this area, the roads are paved, and there are also some green spots around the SOS Children's Village.
The SOS Children's Village Tsumeb covers an area of 38,000 sq m and consists of 10 family houses, the Village Director's house, a guest house, some workshops and some administrative buildings. The SOS kindergarten is also open to children from the neighbourhood. Close by, there is a state-run school, which is attended by the children from the SOS Children's Village. Moreover, two SOS Youth Facilities belong to the SOS Children's Village, where the youths stay during the time of their vocational training or education and prepare themselves for an independent life under the guidance of their youth leaders.
