In 1981, an agreement was signed by the Ministry of Youth and Sport and SOS Children's Village International which was to become the foundation of the work of SOS-KDI in Tunisia. Only one year later construction of the first two SOS Children's Villages in Tunisia was begun. The SOS Children's Village Siliana is located in the north-west of Tunisia, about 130 km away from its capital Tunis. The SOS Children's Village Gammarth is situated 17 km north of Tunis. Both SOS Children's Villages were finished in 1983. In 1984, they were officially inaugurated in the presence of Mrs Wassila Bourghiba, wife of the President of State and , the founder of SOS Children's Village International.

In February 1997, a decision of principle was taken by SOS-KDI with regard to the construction of the third SOS Children's Village in Tunisia. A suitable piece of land had already been offered by the local government of Mahrès (in the south of Tunisia). The construction of the SOS Children's Village Mahrès was terminated in November 1999.
