Umtata is situated in the Eastern Cape Province, north of the provincial capital Bisho. Former state president Nelson Mandela was born in a small village not far from Umtata, making him the most prominent son of this region. Although Umtata is a rather deprived city, the SOS Children's Village lies in a friendly area near the international school and the university.

The Village can be home to a total of 120 children living in 15 family houses. As around 30% of the adult male population of this region are working in neighbouring regions, the women have to take care of the whole family and therefore the SOS Kindergarten is of great help to many working mothers of the region. It can serve 150 children and offers pre-school education. The SOS Children's Village also includes an SOS School, where up to 490 children can be taught and an SOS Clinic which is open to all inhabitants of the region who need medical treatment and care. In 2001 a SOS Youth Facility was put into operation, where youths live during the time of their vocational training or education and prepare themselves for an independent life under the guidance of their youth leaders. In January 2002 a SOS Social Centre, giving support to HIV/AIDS affected families, was opened.
