The city of Urumqi is the capital of Xianjiang Autonomous Region in Northwest China. The Uigurs, an ancient Turkic people, are the aboriginal inhabitants of this region. They are Muslims and their region, which they call Eastern Turkestan, was officially incorporated into the Chinese Empire under the Manchu dynasty in 1844. The region was given the name Xinjiang. This region is situated in the very heart of Asia: Urumqi is the world's farthest city from the sea (about 3,600 km).

The SOS Children's Village Urumqi is located in the western part of the city, about 40 km from the airport. The flight from Beijing to Urumqi takes more than four hours. The SOS Children's Village consists of fourteen family homes, the Village Director's house, an aunts' house, staff quarters and various administrative buildings. There is also an SOS Kindergarten. About 5 km from the SOS Children's Village, there is a large market and a big hospital. The school attached to Xinjiang Agriculture University is close by as well.
