The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in the United States of America started in the 1950s. In 1961, the association SOS Children's Villages USA, Inc. was founded with the sole purpose of raising funds for the international work of SOS-Kinderdorf International.

More than twenty years later, in 1988, the construction of an SOS Children's Village in the USA was considered and a few months later, the board of SOS-Kinderdorf International decided that two SOS Children's Villages should be built in Florida and Chicago.

In 1991, the corner stone of the first American SOS Children's Village was laid in Coconut Creek (Florida), in 1993, the construction work was completed and the first SOS families moved to their new homes.

Meanwhile, the construction of a second SOS Children's Village had been started in Lockport, southeast of Chicago/Illinois which was completed in 1993. In 1994, the official opening ceremony of the SOS Children's Village Lockport took place.
