The work of SOS-Kinderdorf International in Venezuela began in May 1978 with the construction of the first SOS Children's Village in La Caņada near Maracaibo, which was inaugurated on 6 October 1979. In 1981, the construction of the second SOS Children's Village in this Latin American country was started in Ciudad Ojeda. The SOS Children's Village Ciudad Ojeda was opened on 28 September 1983 and in 1987, the third SOS Children's Village was built in El Junquito next to the capital of Caracas. The third SOS project in Venezuela was put in operation on 12 July 1989.

In 1996, an apartment in Maracay and two more apartments in Maracaibo were bought and are run as SOS Youth Communities. The youths from the SOS Children's Villages stay in these apartments during their vocational and higher educational training and are getting used in this way to live an independent life outside the SOS Children's Village step by step.

The SOS Children's Village Maracay whose construction started in November 1999, was opened in March 2001 and is the new home of the children of the SOS Children's Village El Junquito which was closed down. This decision was taken as the surroundings of the newly built SOS Children's Village Maracay offers better opportunities in terms of primary and high school education, leisure time and jobs. The former SOS Children's Village El Junquito nowadays is used as an SOS Training Centre for SOS mothers and as a holiday resort for SOS children and grown up SOS children and their families.
