In January 1992, a fourth Vietnamese SOS Children's Village was officially opened in Vinh. The city of Vinh is situated at the mouth of the Songka river, about 300 km south of the capital Hanoi, in Nghe An, one of the country's poorest provinces. The SOS Children's Village Vinh was erected on a 2.5-hectare site in the city-centre. Several markets, the provincial hospital and various schools are close by. The SOS Children's Village Vinh consists of 15 family houses and the necessary administrative buildings. The houses were built in a low and very solid style to withstand the typhoons, which often hit this region. The SOS Children's Village has its own SOS Kindergarten, which can be attended by children from the neighbourhood as well. The SOS Social Centre includes a day-care centre, where children from working mothers are taken care of. The SOS School offers classes up to secondary level and is open to children from local families, too. Older youths from the SOS Children's Village usually move to the SOS Youth Facility, where they are prepared for their independent lives while they are still at school or while they do their vocational training.
