The SOS Children's Village of Waterfalls is situated in a suburb of the capital city Harare, which is quite a modern city with a university and numerous technical colleges. The SOS Children's Village is surrounded by beautiful blue gum trees and provides ample room for children, who can often be seen playing on the sports fields of the Village. The Village comprises an area of around 36 ha and consists of 15 Family Houses, with each family having its own garden to grow fruits and vegetables, an SOS Kindergarten and an SOS Primary School, which are also attended by children from the neighbourhood. As the first children were growing up, SOS Youth Houses were established outside the Village, where the young people are prepared for their independence. In 1998 two houses for retired SOS-mothers opened their doors. Thus, the SOS-mothers can stay in the SOS Children's Village after their retirement and take over the part of grandmothers. In September 2001 a staff training centre was added and in January 2002 a SOS Social Centre was put into operation, offering support to HIV/AIDS affected families.
