Xiengkhouang was the third SOS Children's Village in Laos. It is situated at Ban Nam Ngam, one of the suburbs of Phonsavan town. This town is the capital of Xiengkhouang province in the Northeast of the country. During the civil war, which lasted from 1964 to 1973, every town in this province was destroyed. In 1975, the reconstruction efforts started. Nowadays, the inhabitants of this province live mainly on rice cultivation and cattle breeding. Phonsavan itself is a commercial centre. In the town, there are several primary and secondary schools and one high school. There is one hospital and there are three markets. The temperatures in this area hardly ever exceed 30 degrees Centigrade in the warm season, and may drop as low as 0 degree in winter.
The SOS Children's Village Xiengkhouang consists of 12 family homes, an SOS Kindergarten, a community centre, a guest house, a workshop, the house of the Village Director and staff quarters. The SOS Kindergarten has four classrooms. In addition, there is a multi-purpose hall and a clinic. Next to the SOS Children's Village, there is an SOS School and a soccer field sponsored by FIFA. The SOS Children's Village is situated at a distance of about three km from the town centre and about three km from Thong Hai Airport.
