SOS After 10 years of efforts a contract on the construction of an SOS Children's Village was signed by the Zambian government on 16 July 1996. In September 1998 the foundation stone was laid in the presence of the Minister of Youth, Sports and Children's Affairs and several other members of the government. The first children were admitted end of September 1999. The official opening ceremony took place on 3 November 2000 under the presence of Dr. F.J.T. Chiluba, president of the Republic of Zambia, and Richard Pichler, secretary general of SOS-Kinderdorf International.
In early 2000, studies for the construction of a second SOS Children's Village in Zambia were carried out and the government soon donated a suitable plot of land in Kitwe, capital of the Copperbelt region in northern Zambia. This project is now in the planning stage. In April 2000, construction work for the SOS Primary School in Lusaka commenced. The school will comprise 14 classrooms, four rooms for lessons in woodwork, home-economics, needlework and computers, a canteen and an administrative building with a multipurpose hall. Just in time for the new school term, the construction work was finished and the primary school opened its doors on 15 January 2001. The school is open to the children from the neighbourhood and will contribute tremendously to the integration of the SOS Children's Village into its surroundings.
