The first Peruvian SOS Children's Village was built in Lima at the beginning of the seventies. It was erected on the right bank of the river Rimac, about 5 km from the centre of Lima. The SOS Children's Village's 2 hectares site is planted with pines, avocado trees, eucalyptus trees and many kinds of bushes. There is a playground in the middle of a small forest. The SOS Children's Village Zárate consists of 15 family houses, a Village Director's house, a house for SOS aunts, a Community House with offices and a store, staff accommodation and a little shop. A dental clinic has been established in the Community House. The workshop for handicrafts and the SOS Kindergarten are also attended by the children of the surrounding area. The older girls are accommodated in an SOS Girls' Residence and the boys in a Boys' Youth House in the district of Carabayllo. The SOS Children's Village also runs a small farm where different animals are raised.
