SOS Emergency Relief Programme, Sudan
In Malakal, South Sudan hundreds of child soldiers have arrived seeking assistance to find their families and a future. SOS Children's Villages is providing the children with food, clothes, shelter, counselling and the possibility of a future.

Leaving a dark past behind them and after two weeks of marching from Ethiopia, Kenya and Eritrea, these children face an uncertain future. They have witnessed conflict which has seen more than two million dead - even today there are over 2,500 children still amongst the ranks of rebel forces.

The SOS Emergency relief programme in Sudan is helping a number of these former child soldiers, giving them a chance to return to normal life. We are looking after over 200 children currently, but the initial figures show that this number is likely to increase to 500.

The SOS Children's Villages Sudan Emergency Relief programme

The initial emergency phase of the sudan relief programme saw over 500kg of medicines being shipped to Malakal by air. Blankets, mattresses and chairs were also bought in to bring the shelters up to an acceptable standard.

Many children are without official proof of identity and so do not have access to any educational or medical services. SOS Children's Villages is seeking to overcome this by organising official documents.

In addition, a family-tracing and reunification programme is being set up to help reunite former child soldiers with their long-lost families

Working in partnership with UNICEF, we are enabling children to attend school to receive a basic education, and the possibility of a future.
